Here’s a glimpse at the current status of the bed bug market and bed bug pest control around the country in 2018. “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite,” is a familiar line we all heard growing up. But for most of us, it wasn’t until we were older that we realized bed bugs are more than just a nighttime rhyme, and instead, bed bug infestations are a serious pest control issue around the United States. Keep reading for a better idea of the 2018 bed bug market in the U.S. The Top 10 Cities With Bed Bugs According to Orkin, the 10 U.S. cities with the highest concentrations of bed bugs in 2018 include: Baltimore Washington, D.C. Chicago Los Angeles Columbus, Ohio Cincinnati Detroit New York San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Dallas-Fort Worth While bed bugs have found there way into places and homes all around the U.S., a good deal of these pests seem to be centered in Baltimore, Maryland, as 2018 is the second year in a row that Baltimore has topped Orkin’s Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List released in January. Known for its historic neighborhoods, monuments, crab cakes, and seemingly now bed bugs, Baltimore doesn’t have any bedbug mitigation programs, according to the Baltimore City Health Department Website. However, according to Bloomberg, Tania Baker, director of communications for Baltimore’s housing authority, says bed bug complaints in Baltimore have gone down by more than 30 percent since Orkin began reporting the top bed bug cities, perhaps signaling a rise in pest control company intervention in the city. Orkin’s list released earlier this year is based on the most residential and commercial treatments for bed bugs from December 2016 to November 2017, Bloomberg reported. This year’s list reflects the rise in bed bug infestations across the United States, said Tim Husen, an Orkin entomologist. Other Bed Bug Trends A traditional seasonal slowdown in bed bug activity is ususally seen in some regions of the U.S. beginning in January. However, BedBug Central’s January Bed Bug Activity Survey showed there would likely be an early start to the bed bug season for some regions of the country this year, Pest Control Technology (PCT) reported in March. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), experts attribute the recent rise in bed bugs in the country to an increase in travel, a lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, a greater resistance of pesticides, and ineffective pest control methods.
